Covering Bergen

Quilts from 1840 to 1940

2024 exhibit poster for Covering Bergen: Quilts from 1840 to 1940, Ridgewood Historical Society & Museum

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Bergen County women made quilts to display on their beds. The heart of this exhibit is a century of quilts made by generations of mostly-unnamed women from the Fred Bogert and Miriam Zabriskie families. Some of the quilts were used, but most were stored as family treasures. The Bogert-Zabriskie collection is supplemented by several loan items and treasures from the Ridgewood Historical Society. "Covering Bergen" gives the viewer a glimpse of the variety of quilts made in Bergen County and the skill of its needlewomen. Featured items include a quilt bordered in 1840s chintz, a mariner's compass quilt, a 1770 embroidery re-purposed into a quilt, and an 1800 quilt from the Netherlands. We are grateful to Jane Bogert Moriarty and Sally Bogert Hemsen for loaning their collection for display.
